Breisach City Tour for Small Groups

Breisach City Tour: Discover a true gem of the Breisgau region! Just 25 kilometers from Freiburg lies Breisach am Rhein—a welcoming town with over 1,650 years of fascinating history. Despite the devastating destruction during the French Wars of Independence and World War II, Breisach has preserved impressive reminders of its long past. On our small-group guided tour of Breisach am Rhein, we’ll explore the Lower Town and the Münsterberg together and introduce you to the most important sights.

Breisach am Rhein—a city with a turbulent past

Although Breisach am Rhein gives the impression of being a quiet and idyllic place today, its history has been marked by turmoil. Its strategically important location on a rocky plateau directly on the Rhine—a feature already valued by the Romans—has had a decisive influence on the course of this small town’s history: At times, the residents battled the Rhine’s floods; at other times, Breisach once again became a pawn in the power struggle between German and French forces. Traces of this turbulent past are still visible everywhere in Breisach today.

On the Breisach city tour for small groups, you’ll discover the key milestones in the city’s history and find answers to fascinating questions. What’s the story behind the bull on Münsterplatz? How did the city’s patron saints, Gervasius and Protasius, come to Breisach?

The Breisach city tour for small groups along the Rhine takes you through the Lower Town. You’ll stroll past the former fishermen’s houses and up to the Münsterberg, which today houses the historic heart of the city. The Radbrunnenturm, dating from the late 12th century, with its 41-meter-deep well, is a striking testament to the ingenuity of the town’s residents. The cathedral, with its two distinct towers, rises proudly above all other buildings. This church, which was nearly demolished after its destruction during World War II, is the landmark of Breisach and a must-see on any visit to the city.

Breisach has plenty of fascinating and entertaining stories to share, which we’d love to introduce to you on our classic city tour!

PLEASE NOTE:

The price of €69.00 is a flat rate for groups of up to 6 people. For each additional person, we charge a surcharge of €10.00 per person.

What to Expect

Experienced tour guides will take you on a classic city tour of Breisach am Rhein. A network of stone staircases leads you to Münsterplatz in the Upper Town, where you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Alsace, the Vosges Mountains, the Black Forest, and the Kaiserstuhl.

  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the city’s symbol, is one of the highlights of this tour. Please note that the interior of the cathedral is not included in the guided tour. However, you have the option of visiting it at your own expense. Detailed explanations of the cathedral’s fascinating features will be provided from the outside. If you wish, you can also request a separate guided tour of the cathedral.
  • Another important landmark is the Radbrunnenturm, which was built during the Zähringer reign in the late 12th century. This fountain made it much easier for residents to access water.
  • The numerous towers, gates, and fortification walls still bear witness today to the time when Breisach, due to its strategic location, was the most important military fortress on the Upper Rhine. The Rhine Gate, an impressive structure designed by the renowned military engineer Vauban, is an outstanding example of this.
  • At the Fischerhalde, the former home of the Breisach Rhine fishermen, you’ll learn how Johan Gottfried Tulla’s straightening of the Rhine had a lasting impact on the lives and work of the Rhine fishermen.
