Description

A classic guided tour of Colmar invites you to discover the hidden cultural capital of Alsace. Idyllically situated at the foot of the Vosges Mountains and the Alsace Wine Route, the picturesque city of Colmar, with its architectural diversity, is considered a symbol of the Franco-German history that makes Alsace so special.

The colorful half-timbered houses in the Old Town evoke the city’s German past, while nearby you’ll see French balconies and facades reminiscent of those found in Paris or Lyon. It is this dazzling blend of German and French influences that gives Colmar its unique charm. Our guided tour of Colmar lets you immerse yourself in the city’s inimitable atmosphere.

Colmar City Tour – Discover Colmar’s Unique Franco-German Heritage

Over the centuries, Colmar has produced a multitude of outstanding artists. One of the city’s most famous sons is undoubtedly the painter Martin Schongauer; we’ll pass by his house on this Colmar city tour, and his “Madonna in the Rose Garden” is on display in the Dominican Church. Not far from there, we come across the birthplace of another well-known resident of the city: at 30 Rue des Marchands, the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi was born in 1834; he made a name for himself throughout the world as the “Father of the Statue of Liberty.” On this Colmar city tour, we’ll tell you about Colmar’s interesting residents as well as its sights, both big and small. Our Colmar city tour takes you past the Unterlinden Museum, the famous “Maison de Têtes,” and through the winding medieval alleys of the Old Town. Of course, a tour of Colmar wouldn’t be complete without a look at St. Martin’s Cathedral and the elaborately painted Pfister House. We’ll continue past the Koifhaus to the tanners’ quarter, where the Schwendi Fountain—another work by Auguste Bartholdi—stands. With this fountain, the city of Colmar erected a monument to the military commander and vineyard owner Lazarus Schwendi, who is said to have brought the Tokay grape from Hungary to Alsace. We then head to the old market hall before our tour concludes in Little Venice, the picturesque former fishing district. Join us in discovering one of France’s most exciting and charming cities!

What to Expect

On our Colmar city tour, you’ll be welcomed by professional German-speaking tour guides who will inspire you with their love for this city and their expertise. With their expert guidance, you’ll get to know the “secret capital” of Alsace. Please note that our Colmar city tour takes place exclusively on cobblestone streets.

  • Your classic guided tour of Colmar begins at the Place des Unterlinden or at an agreed-upon meeting point. From here, you’ll head right into the bustling maze of medieval alleyways. The mix of medieval half-timbered houses and Baroque French townhouses reflects the architectural intertwining of Alsace’s German-French past.
  • In the alleys of the Old Town, we also encounter the diverse array of artists who have shaped Colmar throughout history. Martin Schongauer was born here. His world-famous painting, “Madonna in the Rose Garden,” is on display today in the Dominican Church.
  • On the Colmar city tour, you'll see several important works of art that the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi created for his hometown—the "little siblings," so to speak, of New York's Statue of Liberty.
  • In the old fishing district, you’ll be enchanted by the colorful facades of the old fishermen’s cottages, which are built close to the banks of the Lauch and have earned the district the nickname “Little Venice.”
