Description

Take a guided tour of Strasbourg, the capital of the Grand Est region, which includes Alsace. Here, German and French cultures blend together.

Strasbourg City Tour: A Journey Through History and Culture

Your Strasbourg city tour begins at thePonts Couverts and winds through the narrow streets ofPetite France, the historic tanners’ quarter , to Strasbourg Cathedral. Your walking tour is stress-free, as the Old Town is closed to buses and cars .

On your guided tour, take a leisurely journey through the centuries and the city’s history. Discover the influences of the Germans, the French, and the Habsburgs.

On your walking tour of Strasbourg, you’ll pass the old mint before reaching St. Thomas. Although it lies in the shadow of Notre Dame, St. Thomas is nonetheless a church of great significance in France.

And finally, there it is before us: the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. For over 230 years, this church was the tallest place of worship in the Western Hemisphere. This is where the city tour ends, and your tour guide will say goodbye. But you certainly won’t get bored here: you’re right in the midst of Strasbourg’s lively hustle and bustle. Take in the magnificent half-timbered houses and enjoy the French charm of modern Strasbourg.

Please note: A visit to the interior of the cathedral is NOT included in our Strasbourg city tour. Outside of service times, you may visit the interior on your own. The route of the bus tour is subject to change due to construction sites and other traffic obstructions.

Optional Activity: Guided Bus Tour of Strasbourg

Riding north along the Ill River, we first pass the Foreign Legion barracks. At the new Orthodox church, we turn toward Parc de l’Orangerie, which we pass on our right. Then, in one of the next streets, take a moment to admire the many stork nests: the stork is the quintessential symbol of Alsace.

We’d be happy to give you the opportunity to discover modern Strasbourg and the European Quarter. On a one-hour guided bus tour, you’ll travel through the heart of the EU and see government buildings such as the European Parliament, the Palace of Europe, and the Human Rights Building.

We’ll walk past the synagogue to Place de la République and on to Place d’Étoile, where we’ll get off the tour bus and explore the old town on foot.

We charge €20 per bus for this additional service with your tour bus.

What to Expect

An exciting half-day excursion awaits you. Your knowledgeable tour guide will first introduce you to modern Strasbourg on a guided bus tour. After a short restroom break at Place d’Etoile, you’ll continue on foot through the historic old town.

  • Strasbourg's reputation as the "secret capital of Europe" is evident in the so-called European Quarter: many European institutions, such as the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, and the European Parliament, have chosen the city as their home.
  • Strasbourg’s Old Town is an island surrounded by the Ill River and the Canal du Faux-Rempart. The “Petite France” district on the edge of the island attracts many visitors with its picturesque half-timbered houses and has been home primarily to the city’s tanners since the Middle Ages. Here you’ll learn that the district’s romantic-sounding name actually has a rather unsanitary origin.
  • Place Gutenberg is one of the central historic squares in the Old Town. The monument to Johannes Gutenberg serves as a reminder that the inventor of the printing press lived in Strasbourg for several years.
  • The Notre Dame Cathedral already captivated Goethe, who studied in Strasbourg in the early 1770s. Let yourself be enchanted by the cathedral’s magnificent Gothic architecture on your Strasbourg city tour.
