The guided tour of Breisach Cathedral covers more than 800 years of church history and Christian life in Breisach am Rhein. It also tells the story of the treasures created by Meister HL and Martin Schongauer. On our tour of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Breisach, we’ll take an in-depth look at the building’s interior and exterior.
Today’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedral was built primarily between 1185 and 1230 and was expanded again by the end of the 15th century. The church in Breisach is dedicated to Saint Stephen: The arch on the west side above the portal depicts the life of the saint, who is considered the first martyr of Christianity. Among the cathedral’s treasures are an altar carved by Master HL and a mural by Martin Schongauer.
Although the Breisach Cathedral is a landmark of the city, it is first and foremost an active place of worship. The parish allows visitor groups to enter much more freely than most German cities do.
However, for liturgical or cultural reasons, the cathedral may be closed on short notice; in such cases, guided tours may not be available. We work closely with the parish and the parish office. In very rare, exceptional cases, however, it may be necessary to postpone a cathedral tour at short notice. The Breisach Cathedral tour lasts 60 minutes.
