The Rhine Floodplains near Breisach

Rhine Floodplain Hike: You’ll meet the hiking guide in Sasbach, where the hike through the Rhine floodplains begins. On the edge of the Kaiserstuhl region, the wine-growing community of Sasbach lies in the Upper Rhine Valley between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. The history of settlement in Sasbach dates back to Roman times, when a fortress was built in nearby Limberg. Our meeting point is the parking lot of the Rheinauen Elementary School in Sasbach.

Hike through the Rhine floodplains in a unique nature reserve

The hike winds through the ancient Rhine floodplains from Sasbach to Breisach. The Rhine floodplains are a unique nature reserve featuring easily accessible, level forest trails and a rich variety of flora and fauna. The route takes you past the ruins of the old Sponeck Castle and the Schwendihaus to the charming wine village of Burkheim. Here, your tour guide will take you on a short walking tour of the town. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the “Burkheimer Kräuterhof” and purchase high-quality herbs and teas. The hike continues through the Rhine floodplains and along the Upper Rhine Canal to Breisach. On this section, you’ll learn more about plants and animals and the straightening of the Rhine. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, the sun-drenched Kaiserstuhl region—often referred to as the “German Tuscany”—is home to a unique and rich variety of flora and fauna.

Rhine Floodplain Hike with a Guided Tour of Breisach

The Breisach Cathedral can be seen from a distance. It rises proudly more than 40 meters above the Rhine Valley. Together with your tour guide, you’ll climb a maze of stone steps up the Münsterberg, where your guide will take you on a short walking tour through the old town. Your walk ends at the market square.

Accompanied by a hiking guide, you’ll hike approximately 18 km through the Rhine floodplains. Comfortable shoes are required. The route follows mainly forest trails and includes several crossings of the Rhine. Difficulty: easy / Elevation gain: approx. 75 m / Walking time: approx. 6 hours (No. 18 km)
