Guided Hike in the Kaiserstuhl

Your Kaiserstuhl guided hike takes you from Breisach to Bötzingen. An experienced hiking guide will accompany you from the tranquil town of Breisach am Rhein. Your route first takes you through the Rhine Valley, with its many orchards, to Ihringen: Depending on the season, you can watch the asparagus and strawberry harvests or admire the blossoming apple, pear, and cherry trees.

The wine-growing village of Ihringen in the Kaiserstuhl region

Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl is considered the warmest place in Germany. Here, we leave the plains behind and hike through vineyards that benefit from the warm climate. Wine lovers will encounter well-known names such as the Ihringer Winklerberg. From the Kreuzbuck, you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of the Rhine Valley. We continue hiking at an elevation of 300–375 meters before descending into the Lilienthal valley. Along the way, you’ll pass fields of orchids and giant sequoias. Lilienhof Castle was built here in 1897 but was later demolished. Today, the complex consists of a former farmstead with a central old well. The former main building, known as the “Schlößle,” was renovated in 1980. It houses the forestry administration offices, a lecture hall, and also offers dining options. There are many botanical nature trails in the Lilienthal. Specially designed orchid trails offer the opportunity to discover a variety of orchid species from April through mid-June. One of these trails leads us up to Gagenhardt and the Vogelsang Pass.

The Vogelsang Pass offers a wonderful view of the Upper Rhine Plain and the western side of the Black Forest. To the west, you can see the Kaiserstuhl: Altvogtsburg and Badberg, with their dry meadows, are clearly visible.

We’re almost there: Bötzingen in the Kaiserstuhl

The trail now leads down to Bötzingen, which lies 192 meters above sea level. Today, Bötzingen is a typical wine-growing village in the Upper Rhine Valley. It was first mentioned in a document in 769, when it was donated to the Lorsch Abbey in the Lorsch Codex. Oberschaffhausen was first mentioned in the 12th century, when Pope Eugenius III confirmed its ownership by the St. Ulrich Monastery in the Black Forest. In 1838, the independent towns of Bötzingen and Oberschaffhausen merged to form the municipality of Bötzingen.

Your tour ends here at the train station.
