Description

Discover Breisach – Breisach Museum of Local History

The Breisach Museum of Local History offers you a comprehensive look into the eventful history of this city on the Rhine. The building itself is worth a visit—the museum is located in the historic Rhine Gate. This impressive gate, which stood directly on the riverbank until the Rhine was straightened in the 19th century, was built in the 17th century according to plans by the famous military engineer Vauban. In the 19th century, the rear wing was added, which over time served as a barracks, a military hospital, a tobacco factory, and a prison. Since 1991, the Rhine Gate has housed a true gem—the Breisach Museum of City History.

A guided tour of the Breisach Museum of Local History

The exhibition focuses on Breisach’s significance as a strategically important location on the Upper Rhine and highlights the cultural, economic, and social changes that have taken place over the centuries. Interactive elements and rotating special exhibitions ensure a varied visitor experience.

Exhibits lovingly collected over many years give visitors insight into Breisach’s history, which spans more than 1,650 years. During the guided tour of the Breisach Museum of Local History, you’ll learn more about eras—such as the Celtic and Roman periods—from which little has survived above ground. Artifacts from the Roman era will bring the once-important Roman fort Mons Brisiacus to life before your eyes. Precious artifacts tell fascinating stories about Breisach Cathedral, the city’s landmark. And, of course, this tour devotes considerable attention to one of the most important phases in the city’s history: the time when Breisach was the most important fortress on the Upper Rhine—a period that can be vividly visualized through outstanding models.

Thanks to its clear structure and carefully selected exhibits, the guided tour of the Breisach Museum of Local History is ideal not only for interested visitor groups but especially for school groups. Please contact us—we’d be happy to tailor a program to suit your school class!
