As the summer residence of the Grand Dukes of Baden, Badenweiler was a popular spa town in southwestern Germany in the late 19th century. It was often caught up in the political turmoil of the time: Influenced by the ideas of the French Revolution and shaped by Napoleon’s vision of establishing a Confederation of the Rhine as a neutral zone between the great powers of France, Austria, and Prussia, the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach—also known as the Markgräflerland—evolved into the Grand Duchy of Baden during the Congress of Vienna. Join us as we explore this pivotal period in German history on a stroll through this gem of the Markgräflerland. Through engaging and lively storytelling, you’ll be transported back to the bygone era of the Grand Dukes of Baden.

What to Expect

Our professional tour guides will share the history of Badenweiler in the Black Forest with you, combining charm and expertise.

  • Your walk, “In the Footsteps of the Grand Duke,” begins in front of the Kurhaus Badenweiler. Now we’ll delve into the town’s history.
  • Marvel at the well-maintained spa gardens with their many flowering plants, especially roses, which—thanks to the mild climate—always bloom a little earlier here than in other regions. And the sequoias right next to the ruins of the baths are well worth seeing.
  • Enjoy the view across the Upper Rhine Valley all the way to the Vosges Mountains.
  • Admire the “Belvedere,” one of Badenweiler’s most significant structures. On the initiative of the district director of Kulm, the Belvedere was built from 1811 to 1813 as a “summer house” in Weinbrenner’s Neoclassical style and was greatly appreciated by Grand Duchess Stephanie of Baden during her lifetime.
