Wiesbaden
Description

Taking in Schlossplatz, the hot springs, and the Kurhaus, this 90-minute guided tour of Wiesbaden shows how a Roman spa town became a Nassau residence, an internationally renowned spa town, and finally the state capital of Hesse. Qualified tour guides connect notable buildings with historical contexts and stories from city life.

Understanding Wiesbaden Instead of Just Seeing the Sights

City fires in 1547 and 1561 destroyed large parts of the medieval built environment. As a result, today’s city center is primarily shaped by the period when the city served as a royal residence and its rise as an international spa resort in the 19th century. Stately residences, grand hotels, public buildings, and spacious squares bear witness to an era when guests from many parts of Europe came to Wiesbaden.

Wiesbaden has been the capital of Hesse since 1945. As a result, the cityscape is a direct blend of Roman origins, the Nassau monarchy, international spa culture, and the modern parliamentary era.

From the Historic Pentagon to the Kurhaus

The city tour begins at the Market Square. On Schlossplatz, the former City Palace, the Marktkirche, and the Old and New City Halls stand close together. Built between 1837 and 1842, the City Palace is now home to the Hessian State Parliament and illustrates the transition from a ducal residence to a parliamentary democracy. Across the street, the Marktkirche—built according to plans by Carl Boos—with its striking brick architecture, reflects Wiesbaden’s aspiration to become an up-and-coming residential and spa town.

The thermal springs shaped the city’s development long before the well-known spa buildings were built. Even the Romans knew the place as “Aquae Mattiacorum.” This tradition is evident at the Kochbrunnen: the water, which is more than 66 degrees hot, shaped the baths, drinking cures, hotels, and social life. Spa guests came here not only for medical treatments, but also for entertainment, socializing, and social prestige.

With the opening of the Kurhaus in 1907, the world-renowned spa town gained its prestigious centerpiece. Together with the colonnades, the Bowling Green, and the Hessian State Theater, an ensemble was created in which architecture, culture, and social interaction were deliberately staged.
