Regensburg: A City at the Northernmost Point of the Danube

Highlights of the tour include the Stone Bridge, the cathedral, and an introduction to the city’s history. Like many European cities, Regensburg is best explored on foot; you’ll be walking mainly on cobblestone streets, so comfortable shoes are a must.

Founded by the Romans, Regensburg developed into a city of long-distance trade over the course of the Middle Ages thanks to the Danube as a trade route. Regensburg’s merchants traded in luxury goods from all over Europe: they were just as well known in Kyiv as they were in Venice and Flanders. Spices, fine fabrics, furs, and other treasures were traded through Regensburg.

What to Expect

Regensburg Audio Guide: Over the course of 17 stops, you’ll discover the history of a city founded by the Romans, which was once among the wealthiest cities in Europe and is now home to the best-preserved medieval city in Germany. We recommend starting the tour at the Stone Bridge:

  • The tour begins at the Stone Bridge. Here, you’ll learn about Regensburg’s history. At this stop, we’ll also explain the importance of the Danube to the city’s development and the construction of this city landmark.
  • After a stop at the “Historische Wurstkuchl” and the Salzstadel, we head to the Porta Praetoria, the old city gate from Roman times.
  • The tour will then take you to the Bischofshof and the cathedral. The path winds slowly through the narrow, winding alleys, past Neupfarrplatz, and on to the Old Town Hall. Here, you’ll learn interesting facts about the role of the Imperial Diet in Regensburg.
  • The Baroque Church of St. Emmeram and the princely palace serve as the crowning finale to your journey of discovery through Regensburg.
