Breisach on the Rhine
Description

The classic Breisach city tour invites you to discover a true gem of the Breisgau region. Just 25 km from Freiburg lies Breisach am Rhein, a friendly town with more than 1,650 years of history and stories. Despite the worst devastation caused by the French Wars of Independence and World War II, Breisach has preserved outstanding examples of the town’s long history. On our guided tour of Breisach am Rhein, we’ll explore the Lower Town and the Münsterberg with you and introduce you to the town’s sights.

Breisach am Rhein – A Turbulent History

Although Breisach am Rhein seems quiet and tranquil today, there have rarely been peaceful times in its history. Its location on a rocky plateau directly on the banks of the Rhine—a site already valued by the Romans for strategic reasons—has shaped the history of this small town in many ways: At times, the residents battled the Rhine’s floods; at other times, Breisach became a pawn in the power struggles between German and French forces. Traces of this turbulent past can still be found throughout Breisach today.

On the Breisach city tour, you’ll discover the highlights of the city’s history and find answers to burning questions. What is the Münsterplatz Bull? How did Breisach come to have its patron saints, Gervasius and Protasius?

The classic guided tour of Breisach am Rhein takes you through the lower town, past the houses once inhabited by fishermen, up to the Münsterberg, where the historic center of the town is located today. The Radbrunnenturm, dating from the late 12th century and featuring a 41-meter-deep well, still stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the town’s residents. A cathedral with two distinct towers proudly towers over all the other buildings. This church, which nearly fell victim to a wrecking ball after its destruction in World War II, is the landmark of Breisach and is a must-see during any visit to the town.

Breisach has many exciting and entertaining stories to share, which we’d love to tell you on our classic Breisach city tour!

What to Expect

Qualified tour guides will accompany you on the classic city tour of Breisach am Rhein. Through a labyrinth of stone stairways, you’ll reach Münsterplatz in the Upper Town. From there, enjoy the unforgettable view of Alsace, the Vosges Mountains, the Black Forest, and the Kaiserstuhl.

  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the city’s landmark and, of course, a highlight of the city tour. Please note: the interior of the cathedral is not included in this tour. However, you have the option to visit the interior “on your own.” The exterior of the cathedral will be explained in detail, though. You are welcome to book a separate tour of the cathedral.
  • Another landmark is the Radbrunnenturm. This fountain was built during the Zähringer dynasty in the late 12th century. It was only with the construction of this fountain that the citizens’ water supply was made easier.
  • Towers, gates, and fortress walls still serve as reminders of the time when Breisach, thanks to its strategic location, was the most important military fortress on the Upper Rhine. The Rhine Gate, designed by the great fortress architect Vauban himself, is an impressive example of this.
  • At the Fischerhalde, the former home of the Breisach Rhine fishermen, you will learn how Johan Gottfried Tulla’s straightening of the Rhine changed the lives and work of the Rhine fishermen.
