Breisach on the Rhine
Description

Guided Tour of Breisach Cathedral

The guided tour of Breisach Cathedral covers more than 800 years of church history and Christian life in Breisach am Rhein. It also tells the story of the treasures created by Meister HL and Martin Schongauer. On our tour of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Breisach, we’ll take an in-depth look at the building’s interior and exterior.

Today’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedral was built primarily between 1185 and 1230 and was expanded again by the end of the 15th century. The church in Breisach is dedicated to Saint Stephen: The arch on the west side above the portal depicts the life of the saint, who is considered the first martyr of Christianity. Among the cathedral’s treasures are an altar carved by Master HL and a mural by Martin Schongauer.

Information About the Breisach Cathedral Tour

Although the Breisach Cathedral is a landmark of the city, it is first and foremost an active place of worship. The parish allows visitor groups to enter much more freely than most German cities do.

However, for liturgical or cultural reasons, the cathedral may be closed on short notice; in such cases, guided tours may not be available. We work closely with the parish and the parish office. In very rare, exceptional cases, however, it may be necessary to postpone a cathedral tour at short notice. The Breisach Cathedral tour lasts 60 minutes.

What to Expect

You’ll love the guided tour of Breisach Cathedral. Our trained tour guides will give you unexpected and fascinating insights into this extraordinary building—both inside and out. Of particular interest:

  • The relics of the city’s two patron saints, Gervasius and Protasius, arrived in Breisach in 1164. They rest in a 15th-century silver reliquary in the sanctuary.
  • The magnificent high altar, created by the artist HL, dates from the early 16th century and is an impressive piece of woodcarving.
  • The painter Martin Schongauer was born in Colmar and became a citizen of Breisach in 1489. He painted a depiction of the Last Judgment on the west wall of the cathedral. It is the largest depiction of its kind north of the Alps.
  • In addition, the tour guides will share with you some of the lesser-known anecdotes and scholarly insights about St. Stephen's Cathedral.
