Bonn City Tour: The Government District – A Journey Through the History of the Federal Republic of Germany

This guided tour of Bonn takes you to the federal city’s government district. When Bonn was unexpectedly chosen as the provisional seat of parliament and government on November 3, 1949, the small city on the Rhine became the stage for national and international politics. And it has remained so to this day, even though the relocation of the seats of parliament and government to Berlin following reunification meant that major political decisions are now made primarily in Berlin. Bonn found new ways to provide a home for political institutions. On the Bonn Government District city tour, you’ll encounter the political history of the young Federal Republic of Germany, as well as a city that remains politically active today.

From Adenauer to the UN Campus—Guided Tour of Bonn’s Government District

The former government district in Bonn, now often referred to as the “Bundesviertel,” stretches between Bonn and Bad Godesberg. From 1949 to 1976, the Federal Chancellor’s first official residence was located here, in the late-Classical-style Palais Schaumburg. Villa Hammerschmidt, on the other hand, has served as the official residence of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1950, though since 1994 it has served only as a secondary residence. The former plenary halls bear witness to Bonn’s history as the federal capital just as much as the House of Representatives, known as “Langer Eugen,” and the “Bundesbüdchen”—the famous kiosk where politicians, diplomats, and visitors would meet informally. Your tour guide can share countless anecdotes from the era of the “Bonn Republic,” when the nation’s destiny was shaped in Bonn. But a walking tour of the Bonn Government District also reveals the story of a successful structural transformation. Known as the Federal District since 1993, it has become home to major companies such as Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post, as well as scientific and international organizations, including the United Nations. Thus, the former government district has remained a vibrant place where political history is still being written today.
