Discover the City Through Play: A Guided Tour for Kids

The city tour for children and elementary school students in Freiburg is designed for children ages 7 to 12. Grand historical narratives aren’t the focus here—it’s all about life in Freiburg in days gone by, the people who lived here, and the stories behind the grand buildings of the past. Trained tour guides show children and teens that history can be exciting and entertaining.

Our city tour for children and elementary school students brings history to life in an exciting way. Children ages 7 to 12 discover what life used to be like in Freiburg. The focus is on the people, their stories, and the secrets behind the city’s famous landmarks. Trained tour guides enthusiastically show that history is anything but boring.

Why are there so many coats of arms decorating the Old Town Hall? Why is a house called “Zum Walfisch” (The Whale), even though there are no whales in the Breisgau region? And what’s the story behind the famous Bächle, which invite you to play and splash around? On this city tour for children and elementary school students, you’ll get exciting answers to these questions.

The cathedral also surprises visitors with many unique features, both big and small. The children discover curiosities and immerse themselves in stories from times gone by. To wrap things up, everyone gets to meet the emperors who look out from the Historic Department Store onto Münsterplatz.

Important Note: Our tour guides tailor the tour to be child-friendly and put their hearts into it. However, unsupervised minors are not permitted to participate. Adults accompanying their children will also enjoy an entertaining and educational city tour.

What to Expect

The tour guides have a lot of experience leading tours for children and will inspire our young guests with a love of history.

  • The guided tour of Freiburg for children begins at the Tourist Information office on Rathausplatz. Over the course of an hour, we’ll explore the city’s history together—in a way that’s both child-friendly and exciting—as we walk from Rathausplatz to Münsterplatz.
  • There’s plenty for curious children to see at Freiburg Cathedral: there are 91 gargoyles alone, all of which look different, and some of which have funny stories behind them. But the most important thing is the answer to the question: Why is there a bare butt on Freiburg Cathedral?
  • What was life like for people in Freiburg during the Middle Ages? Through our stories, we paint a picture of everyday life for the people in Freiburg’s Old Town, among the fountains, Bächle, and Münstermarkt.
  • Why do houses have names—and what do they mean? There are no whales to be found anywhere along the Dreisam River, but in the Old Town there is a house called “Haus zum Walfisch.” We share this and other stories about house names with the children on the Freiburg Kids’ Tour.
