Basel Audio Guide: Discover a Swiss Metropolis

Highlights of the tour include the Tinguely Fountain and the Münsterberg. An introduction to the city’s history is, of course, also part of the Basel audio guide. Like many European cities, Basel is best explored on foot; you’ll be walking mainly on cobblestone streets, so comfortable shoes are a must. There’s a short but steep climb up to the Münsterberg.

More than 2,000 years ago, Celts settled on the site of today’s Novartis Campus. The excavated settlement is now known as the Basel Gasworks. Later, the Celts also settled on Basel’s Münsterberg and founded an oppidum there. Over the course of history, they were followed by the Romans, the Alemanni, and the Franks.

Visitors will encounter Basel’s eventful history everywhere in the city. What began with the Celts and Romans continued into the Middle Ages. Life in Basel has always been full of events. At each stop along the digital tour, we’ll introduce you to specific events and people who have had a particularly significant impact on Basel.

What to Expect

A digital, self-guided tour of Basel. At 21 stops, you’ll discover more than 2,000 years of history. We recommend starting your digital tour of Basel at the Tinguely Fountain:

  • At the Tinguely Fountain, you’ll find a historical introduction to Switzerland’s third-largest city. We’ll also tell you about the Tinguely Fountain, which is also known as the Fasnacht Fountain.
  • Next, we head to Barfüßerplatz, one of Basel’s most important squares. The small Birsig River used to flow through this part of the city. Back then, the area was also home to tanners, fishermen, and other artisans.
  • On the Münsterberg, we’ll explore religious life in Basel. The seat of the Catholic bishop since late antiquity, the city became Protestant in the 16th century. Learn more about the construction of Basel Cathedral, the cloister, and the “Gallus Gate.”
  • We also take this opportunity to enjoy the view across the Rhine to “Kleinbasel” on the other side of the river.
  • We continue through Augustinergasse and Rheinsprung to the original building of Switzerland's oldest university.
  • The self-guided digital tour of Basel ends at the 16th-century town hall on Marktplatz.
