Just 25 km from Freiburg lies Breisach am Rhein, a true gem of the Breisgau region. This charming little town can look back on over 1,650 years of history and stories. Despite suffering severe destruction during the French Revolutionary Wars and World War II, wonderful reminders of Breisach’s long history have survived. On the Breisach am Rhein audio guide, we’ll explore the Lower Town and the Münsterberg with you and introduce you to the local sights.
Now you have the opportunity to enjoy this city tour at any time with the audio guide for just €5.99. Scan the QR code or tap the download links on this page, and once you’ve installed the Future History app, you’re ready to go. It’s convenient, at your own pace, and without having to join a large group. You decide when you want to start the city tour and when you want to take breaks. You can listen to or read about particularly interesting stops as many times as you like.
Even though Breisach am Rhein seems quiet and tranquil today, there have been few peaceful periods in its history. Its location on a rocky plateau, right on the banks of the Rhine—a spot the Romans already valued for strategic reasons—has shaped the history of this small town in many ways: at times, the residents battled the Rhine’s floods; at other times, Breisach am Rhein was tossed back and forth like a pawn in the power struggle between Germany and France. Even today, traces of this turbulent past can be found everywhere in Breisach am Rhein. On our Breisach city walking tour, you’ll experience the highlights of the town’s history and learn the answers to burning questions, such as what the bull on Münsterplatz is all about and how Breisach came to have Gervasius and Protasius as its patron saints. Our guided tour of Breisach am Rhein takes you through the former fishermen’s quarter in the lower town up to the Münsterberg, where the town’s historic center is located. The Radbrunnenturm, dating from the late 12th century and housing a 41-meter-deep well shaft, still stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the mountain dwellers. Towering proudly above all the buildings, the cathedral rises toward the sky with its two distinct spires. This church, which nearly fell victim to the wrecking ball after the destruction of World War II, is Breisach’s landmark and, of course, a must-see on any guided tour of Breisach am Rhein. Breisach has plenty of fascinating and entertaining history to offer, which we’d love to share with you on our digital city tour of Breisach am Rhein!
