On this walking tour, learn more about the former fortress on Freiburg’s Schlossberg, which the people of Freiburg now cherish as a venue for celebrations and a local recreational area. The Schlossberg offers fantastic views of Freiburg—but that’s not all! Fascinating stories lie behind names like Salzbüchsle and Redoutenhäusle.
Freiburg’s Schlossberg has a rich history; away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Town, it offers a wonderful opportunity for a themed city tour in Freiburg. Since the 1950s, Freiburg’s Schlossberg has been a protected landscape area, so you might even encounter protected species here, such as the wall lizard or bats. First, the tour heads up to Kanonenplatz and then continues to the Schlossberg Tower on the Salzbüchsle. Along the way, you’ll find traces of numerous fortifications that the Zähringers, Habsburgs, and French built and then demolished over the centuries. For the Freiburg Schlossberg, so peaceful today, was once a fiercely contested and heavily fortified site. The trail leads past the remains of the Communication Wall, continuing on to the city wall and the so-called Redoutenhäusle. At many points, you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of the Old Town and the Dreisam Valley. Discover a historically fascinating and scenically beautiful part of Freiburg on our Freiburg Schlossberg Tour.
Please note: The usual meeting point for this themed city tour in Freiburg is at the Schwabentor, from where the tour proceeds on foot up to Kanonenplatz. Alternatively, you can also meet your tour guide at the upper station of the Schlossbergbahn. The fare for the Schlossbergbahn is not included in the price.
Special Notes: This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. The route is not accessible to wheelchairs or walkers. From November through February, the tour is not offered due to weather conditions and for safety reasons. Please note that even the shorter tour starting at the Schlossbergbahn mountain station involves climbing a few meters in elevation and walking on rocky terrain. Sturdy footwear is therefore strongly recommended year-round.
