Colmar for School Groups – History and Culture

Colmar is one of the most fascinating cities in Alsace and offers school groups an unforgettable experience. The guided tour, specially tailored for school groups, takes you directly to the city’s most important sights and provides fascinating insights into its history, culture, and architecture.

The tour begins at the well-known Unterlinden Museum, located in the former Dominican monastery. Here, school groups learn how the monastery has evolved over the centuries into a symbol of Alsatian culture.

Next, we’ll continue on to the picturesque “Little Venice” neighborhood. Colorful half-timbered houses and idyllic canals characterize this part of town. The history of the fishermen and merchants who once brought these streets to life comes to life. A short photo session offers the opportunity to capture the special atmosphere.

Another highlight is a visit to a local market. Here, participants will discover typical Alsatian specialties and learn more about the regional cuisine, which combines German and French influences. With a little luck, they’ll be able to sample some of these delicacies.

The Church of Saint-Martin, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, is also on the itinerary. School groups will learn how the construction of this church shaped the cityscape and what significance faith held for Colmar. The colorful stained-glass windows depict biblical stories and are sure to amaze visitors.

At the end of the tour, everyone meets at Unterlinden Platz. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on the experience together, share your impressions, and ask questions. This interactive wrap-up session promotes an understanding of Colmar’s cultural diversity and unique history.

  • A vibrant network of medieval alleyways. The striking combination of historic half-timbered houses and elegant Baroque townhouses vividly illustrates the architectural intertwining of German and French history that has shaped Alsace.
  • Martin Schongauer was born in Colmar; his famous work, “Madonna in the Rose Garden,” is now on display in the Dominican Church.
  • Notable works of art created by the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi for his hometown—the “little siblings,” so to speak, of New York’s Statue of Liberty.
  • In the old fishing district, the colorful facades of the old fishermen’s cottages—built close to the banks of the Lauch River—are enchanting and have earned the district the nickname “Little Venice.”
