A crafts tour in Freiburg is one of many ways to introduce children to the city’s history in a fun and engaging way. This craft tour is aimed specifically at children ages 8 to 12 who already have some familiarity with the concept of “crafts.” Trained tour guides show the children and teens that history can be exciting and entertaining.
On the crafts tour, you’ll meet your tour guide at the Schwabentor and explore the old craftsmen’s quarter along the Gewerbekanal. The children will learn why the tanners lived and worked outside the city walls. The Gewerbekanal played a major role in the Schneckenvorstadt neighborhood: millers, tanners, fishermen, and even a public bathhouse had to be considerate of one another when using the water, and that wasn’t always easy. Of course, we’ll also visit the Gewerbekanal’s most famous resident: the crocodile. After an hour full of discoveries in the artisans’ quarter, we’ll wrap up our Freiburg children’s tour at the Martinstor.
The children learn a lot about traditional crafts as well as about working and living conditions in the Middle Ages. Along the way, the tour guides answer many questions in a child-friendly way, such as: What does a tanner actually do? Why were the millers responsible for maintaining the trade canal? Of course, the guilds and their importance to economic life in the medieval city also play a role. How a guild was organized, what a guild emblem is, and what it meant to belong to a guild are explained in a clear and age-appropriate way. Short stories about life in the artisans’ quarter round out the experience. Pure fun and excitement!
